Laura reading a good book in January, 2005.
Laura loved to read, whether at home before bedtime, at school, or during hospital stays (and she had plenty of those). When she was a preschooler, a family friend gave her “Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein. She really enjoyed reading it and was always thrilled to get “another one”. Before bedtime, she would pick three or four short stories to read aloud (and maybe even snuck in one or two more). Sometimes she would read them all or we would alternate and take turns. To honor Laura’s spirit and her love of reading, her family created a kid-sized oasis of purple, pink and lime green in the West Springfield Public Library in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Named Laura’s Loft, the space contains comfortable moon chairs for browsing and a wooden bookcase filled with a wonderful collection of Laura’s favorite books that reflect who she was …. her love of animals, baking, helping mom in the kitchen preparing meals and snacks, “Chicken Soup” stories, poetry (including Shel Silverstein’s series), and I Spy books.
